Anhydrous HF

AHF

Anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (AHF) is a strong acid, gaseous at standard ambient conditions.

It is the precursor of many inorganic and all organic fluorine derivatives, including fluoropolymers, refrigerants, pharmaceuticals and many other products. It is also widely used as catalyst in alkylation processes in oil refining and petrochemicals.

The production of Anhydrous HF is obtained through the following steps:

1. the reaction of dry acid grade fluorspar (CaF2) with sulphuric acid (H2SO4) and oleum in externally heated rotary kilns, with production of gaseous HF and calcium sulphate (CaSO4) as a byproduct;

2. the purification and condensation of gaseous HF to produce, through distillation, liquid Anhydrous Hydrogen Fluoride.

Fluorsid has a capacity of approx. 23,000 MT/y of AHF at its Fluorsid Alkeemia site in Porto Marghera (Venice).

Anhydrous Hydrogen Fluoride is available in bulk, in ISO rail tanks or tanker trucks.
